British author John Mortimer is best known to television audiences as the creator of Rumpole of the Bailey, the British comedy-drama popular with PBS viewers and starring Leo McKern as an aging barrister fighting the good fight in court but henpecked at home. This 1962 film, Trial and Error, is also based on a Mortimer story and also deals with the decidedly unglamorous lives of people shackled to an imperfect legal system. Richard Attenborough plays an ordinary, quiet fellow who kills his wife after years of listening to her gaudy laughter. He freely admits he did the deed, but the defense counsel assigned to him (Peter Sellers), desperate to be part of a significant trial, tries fruitlessly to mount a compelling case for his innocence. Sellers and Attenborough, perhaps never better than in this film by James Hill (Born Free), brilliantly portray the subtle shift of authority and sympathy between their characters, the way the accused slowly comes to the emotional rescue of his own, depressed advocate. So joined are these two by a common, seemingly pointless destiny that they even pay supernatural visits to one another's pasts--much like Scrooge and his Christmas spirits. This package contains three films, one a bona fide classic, one an interesting first film by someone who would go on to greatness, and, um, one other one. This set would be quite a bargain if the transfer to DVD weren't so crappy. It appears that these films were transferred from tape. Since the whole idea of DVD is higher definition, that pretty much defeats the purpose of owning these discs, unless you can't find these titles in a higher-quality version. Luckily, the best of these three, the George A. Romero classic about flesh-eating zombies, Night of the Living Dead, is available in an exquisite pressing with THX sound and lots of extras. It is also available in this version for the cost-conscious consumer: Night of the Living Dead. It's nice to have a copy of Francis Ford Coppola's feature debut, Dementia 13--at least it would have been, if the transfer to DVD hadn't been so botched that you could see the frames rolling out of control and the tape bunching up in the last 15 minutes of the film. So on the level of the films themselves two out of three ain't bad. Which is to say that Revolt of the Zombies is so dull, it'll have even zombies checking their watches. --Jim Gay

If it weren't so clearly a product of the precise moment when the U.S. had just suffered the Japanese sneak attacks of December 1941, To the Shores of Tripoli might easily be mistaken for the definitive parody of World War II Hollywood jingoism by a latter-day satirical troupe--say, the SCTV gang. Smartass child of privilege John Payne is sent to Marine boot camp to learn about responsibility and being a team player. Although shot on location at San Diego, the sunny Technicolor training exercises look more like a musical-comedy summer stock company working out. Drillmaster Randolph Scott and fiery-haired nurse Maureen O'Hara love Payne in spite of his myriad obnoxious qualities, and he does have the right stuff, as he demonstrates at the drop of a hat--and the rest of his civilian clothes--the minute he hears about Pearl Harbor over the radio. The finale, a troopship embarkation turned full-scale production number, has to be seen to be disbelieved. --Richard T. Jameson

Actress Ida Lupino became an accidental auteur when director Elmer Clifton suffered a heart attack three days into the production of this independent feature, which Lupino cowrote (with later blacklistee Paul Jarrico) and coproduced. It was the beginning of a second career for Lupino, who quietly became the only woman director working in Hollywood in the 1950s. Lupino effortlessly transfers the unsentimental pragmatism of her screen character to this surprisingly distanced account of an unhappy young woman (newcomer Sally Forrest) who runs away from her stifling small-town home. She dreams of joining the surly, sexy jazz pianist (Leo Penn, in a performance that strikingly anticipates the work of his son Sean) but has to settle for the fey attentions of boyish gas-pump jockey Keefe Brasselle, whose idea of fun runs more to toy trains and merry-go-rounds. Lupino uses extremely long takes to highlight the character's sense of isolation and entrapment, but her standoffish camera never allows the film to descend to melodramatic pathos, even when the girl discovers she's pregnant and seeks refuge in a prisonlike home for unwed mothers. Among the film's many astonishing protofeminist moments is a vision of childbirth as blurry expressionist nightmare. --Dave Kehr
